Vetiver, the grass itself and basic knowledge of it, has been in Viet Nam for probably many decades to mainly extract oil. In order to reduce erosion of slopes in Vietnam, in 1998, Mr. Ken Crismier (The Vetiver Network International – TVNI) has translated the “green book”: Vetiver grass –“ The hedge against erosion” of Work Bank into Vietnamese and took responsibility for financial support to publish in 5 000 copies by the Agriculture Publishing House in Hanoi.
In 1999, with his recommendation, The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development invited Dr. Paul Truong (Australia) and Dr. Diti Hengchaovanich (Thailand) to Vietnam to introduce this grass in a number of conferences held in January in Hanoi (19 January) and Ho Chi Minh City (29 January), along with a smaller non-MARD meeting in Vinh (25 January). Invited international vetiver experts were Paul Truong from Australia and Diti Hengchaovanich from Thailand.
Vietnam Vetiver Network (VNVN) has established since 1999 by Mr Ken Crismier who was in charge of Interim Coordinator. From 2001 to 2003 and from 2003 to 2011, this position was handed over by Dr. Pham Hong Duc Phuoc (Nong Lam University) and Dr. Tran Tan Van (Vietnam Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (VIGMR)). After some of successful applications, (Dr. Pham Hong Duc Phuoc and his colleagues of Thien Sinh Company and 16 multi-army, Dr. Le Viet Dung and his colleagues in Can Tho University, Dr. Tran Tan Van and his colleagues..), Vetiver Grass has been used widely in Viet Nam. In 2001 and 2003, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and Ministry of Transportation issued the decision to official allow the use of Vetiver in disaster mitigation and infrastructure protection. A number of research projects and applications were implemented including some important projects such as Slope protection of Hochiminh Highway, riverbank protection in An Giang and Quang Ngai, sea dyke protection in Hai Hau (Nam Dinh) etc.
Since 2003, Vetiver has been used in experimental mitigation of soil and water pollution, waste and wastewater treatment, environment protection in some local areas such as Bac Giang, Bac Ninh, Thai Binh, Thua Thien-Hue, Dong Nai, Can Tho, An Giang… Up to now, Vetiver has been known and used in nearly 40 provinces in Viet Nam. TVNI has high appreciated the development and successful results of Vetiver research and applications in Viet Nam. In 4th International Conference on Vetiver (ICV-4) held in Caracas, Venezuela (October 22th-26th 2006), VNVN was awarded a number of noble prizes by TVNI such as Vetiver Champion, Disaster Mitigation Prize, Certificate of Technical Excellence Class 1.
In 2011, Dr. Tran Tan Van was officially appointed as Director of Viet Nam Vetiver Network, ME. Tran Van Man has been in charge of VNVN Coordinator under the auspices of Dr. Paul Truong. In The 5th International Conference on Vetiver, ME. Tran Van Man represented VNVN to summit as the host of 6th International Conference on Vetiver in Da Nang in 2015. This submission received the great encouragement from the Board Member of TVNI as well as international expert took part in the conference, it also confirmed the role of VNVN in the Vetiver Network.
